Where to learn

Have those here who free climb also tried their fate at free soloing? I was told this takes longer to practice since you will be climbing without any rope and it (as it does make sense) would be a little tricker. Though there are places you can pay to practice. I know places like Yosemite would probably ban this type of practice since they would not be held responsible for an injury, but are there legal places to do this at?
